Biodegradable and compostable materials are advanced alternatives to conventional plastics, engineered to decompose into non-toxic components through natural microbial processes. Types and Their Applications

PLA (Polylactic Acid)

PLA is a plant-based biodegradable plastic derived from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugarcane. It offers excellent clarity and processability for injection molding and extrusion applications.

  • ‍Appearance: Transparent and rigid with good gloss‍
  • Color: Naturally clear or milky white; customizable‍
  • ‍Applications: Food packaging, disposable cutlery, thermoformed trays, 3D printing filaments

PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoates)

PHA is produced via microbial fermentation and can biodegrade in soil, freshwater, and marine environments. Advanced PHA technologies utilize greenhouse gases as feedstock, contributing to lower carbon footprint material solutions.

  • ‍Appearance: Semi-crystalline with moderate flexibility‍
  • Color: Usually off-white or light tan‍

PBAT (Polybutylene Adipate Terephthalate)

PBAT is often blended with PLA or starch compounds to improve flexibility and toughness in compostable film applications.

  • ‍Applications: Compostable shopping bags, food packaging films, agricultural mulch films

PBS (Polybutylene Succinate)

PBS offers improved heat resistance compared to PLA and is suitable for hot-fill or higher temperature applications.
